I can see you...

Agreed! Mine can't tell the diffrence between a worm, my finger or the tank themometer

Really? What's their sense of smell like then? Because mine do a lot of contradicting things...

hi squid
i think they have a good sense of smell............mine could see me when i walked pass the tank and he would follow me.....thinking i would feed him

My axolotl tends to look out of his hidey-hole and keep an eye on me. If he's out and about and somebody enters the room or I come closer to the tank then he does tend to come to the glass and follow them or me around. He seems to be able to see people from a good metre or so away from the glass, so I guess that his eyesight can't be that bad. I don't know much about axolotl sense of smell, but it seems that their smell is pretty good. From my understanding they hunt by detecting movement more than anything else. Please correct me if I am wrong, of course.

You're very right!!

"They do have a very well developed lateral line and sensory system. They can detect electrical fields and vibrations in the water, in the same way that fish do. For example, this means they can sense something sinking through the water near them, even if they can't see it. " again from Axolotl.org

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
