Illness - help needed!

Re: Illness - help needed! LUMP!

Hello Doris (and everyone else)!

Just a quick update and some more news. Axel has been in the fridge all this time and is still fighting on.

Recently he is seeming better - being more lively and responsive, and has just eaten his first meal in weeks (I may have cried a little!!). He’s just now gone back into the big (completely clean) tank and seems to be enjoying it.

BUT he still has the red marks on his legs. I’ve also just noticed a big red lump on his neck. See the photos attached. This is so alarming! Any clue what this could be???

Also, I picked up some colloidal silver from an aquarium the other day - would this be useful at all?

Thank you! Hope all your axie friends are happy and well! x

I'm so happy to read he's better! I know how you felt when he finally ate. That's what I felt when Nenetl and Nahuatl ate for the first time after being in the fridge for so long. I cried, too. :D

The pictures don't show. :( The red lump could be caused by an infection or parasites, it can even be cancer. Did the vet see it?

I don't know about the silver, but I found this thread. http://www.caudata.org/forum/f46-be...xolotl/97484-injured-axolotl-please-help.html
Did you read the information there? I would stay away from medication. Axies are so sensitive to all kinds of treatments and metals, I'd be too scared to hurt him.

Did you desinfect his tank before you put him back there? We don't want him to catch again what caused the problems in the first place!

You could put him in a tea bath (again?) until the vet diagnosed the red marks and the lump.

Let me try with the photos again. Can you see these?

I did disinfect the tank and everything in it before he went in again. I was super vigilant!

The vet just said "it could just be a little inflammation patch still?" - I don't think he really knows. :( He also told me I might as well try the colloidal silver, but yes, as you are, I am wary of it.

For now I'm thinking of just monitoring the situation for a few days...

There isn't really a vet close by I could take him to - I would have to travel 1-2 hours with him, and I'm trying to not stress him out!

I don't think the photos worked then...how about now?

Sorry for not responding earlier! He still looks sick and stressed. Poor boy. :( I believe he still needs medication.
You could ask your vet if he is willing to get in touch with one of the vets from the list? Though my vet is experienced with amphibians and reptiles, it's normal for her to discuss difficult cases with others. You could give him the numbers and adresses, and maybe a USB stick with pictures, so he can ask a colleague for advice and send pictures easily?

Re: Sick axolotl - red lumps!

The closest thing I could find to what's going on was this. It's another forum thread about something slightly similar, it also has the information about a bacterial infection I was going to post. I don't think it's a bacterial infection, however, because the description doesn't clearly match the problem you're having. Hopefully this is solved soon, but I'd definitely take your axie to a vet if there's one nearby that can treat exotic animals.

Re: Sick axolotl - red lumps!

Ah - hello! Thank you for responding!
I did take him to a vet and continually asked him about Axel - to no avail, really (he just said he didn't know what was the matter..).
But - whatever it was - Axel now seems to be much better! He is his old self again, eating as much as I feed him, and looking better every day. I thought I was going to lose him but it seems he will live to fight another day!
:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Hello! Thank you so much for responding! I asked my vet about him again a few times - but he never really answered or knew what was wrong. But, whatever it was, I'm happy to say that he seems to have fought it off. The marks on his legs are now gone, as are the lumps! He is acting like his old self and eating everything I put in front of him. He looks healthier every day and is gaining weight again. :D:D:D
I'm keeping a super SUPER close eye on him, of course, but for now it looks like he's doing good. I'm so happy! I really thought I was going to lose him!
Thank you so much for your help. I will let you know if I ever find out what it actually was!
