Last Monday (18th), my baby axi (melanoid) had a very swollen bum. I will include a picture. It was awful. So after reading many posts, I fridged her. Everyday I changed her water and each day there were some specks of sand. I thought we were making progress. About 3 days ago, a fungus started on her pretty little ear. I knew I would probably have to give her a salt bath, but read it could be painful and I wanted to wait until maybe she had a bowel movement. 2 days ago, I realized I was making a mistake. I was pulling water from baby axi's tank. We have another wild "male" I think that we bought at the same time that is still in that tank. So I've been putting few cups of that water in the fridge, until I realized I needed to be using clean water minus chlorine. I changed her water last night around midnight, just went to check her and she's covered in white spots, I assume its fungus (pic attached) Im freaking out, I love her, I wanted to get her back in with her Little friend soon. Please help... i need advise badly! By the way wegot both babies in July, she was about 2 maybe 2.5 inches long.

Yeah, this is pretty bad. It might already be too late.
What concerns me most is that in your first picture, the other axolotl looks pretty bad as well. The lighter one on the left - that's not the axolotl with fungus problems, right? He looks very ill too.

This will definitely need salt baths, and then it's hoping that she still has enough strength to survive the stress and salt.

Most important: water parameters. Fungus like this doesn't just suddenly appear. What are your ammonia, nitrite, nitrate values and what is the temperature of the water (both in the tank and the tub)?

The pic of the two was from Jan when we first got them. They were scrawny. My wild is enormous now and very healthy looking. She did not grow as fast as him. The main axi tank runs about 65-66 consistently. All levels were spot on about 3 days ago. I have not tested the water in the fridge. Ive been using bottled water adding conditioner. Im not sure exactly what temp. I will have to check when I get home. I will attach more recent pics of him and her. I gave her a salt bath last night for 15 min (1 quart with 2.5 tea of sea salt) then i checked her this am and did it again for 15 min. Ive attached pictures of what they looked like about 4 weeks ago, pics of her the this am after the second salt bath. The fungus was just a little spot on one ear and 24 hrs later it was everywhere. I feel so bad. Is there any kind of medicine that might help? Also, I can give exact parameters when I get back home.

Did she survive?

@carlynbriston

You never got back to the community with your tank parameter. Please tell us if everything is ok. I am very concerned, I hope everything turned out ok and I hope you're ok too. A sick pet is heartbreaking to endure.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
