hello all, Simple question: i heard ivy is good to use for FB newts in the aquarium. Is all types of ivy ok? I live in vancouver and ivy is grown wild all over the place. could i use this?
I do not know if Ivy does well IN an aquarium or not. I have used a clipping in a hang on the back whisper type filter and just left the roots in the water and the stuff grew like wildfire. It was a 90 gallon tank with 2 med Koi in it so there was a tremendous amount of nutrients in the water.
I've never tried ivy in water, but it might work. Nearly all the ivies you find sold as houseplants are that same species - Hedera helix. Let us know if it works.
If that doesn't work, try devil's ivy (Pothos/Epipremnum). This stuff grows great in water. So many people have this as a houseplant, you can probably find some cuttings somewhere.
I tried it in water (hydroponically) and it didn't work too well for me. The problem with ivy is that it likes for its soil to dry out a bit between waterings. If you have it well drained soil or put it in a sealed pot in whatever substrate your using it should do well. It doesn't mind the high humidity at all.
