Is it fungus or something else?

We have a clutch of 3 month old axolotls, about 90 left currently. Most are in individual containers and then we have 2 bins with about 14 each in them. A few of them have had gills like this for a long time and we didn't know what it was. In the last 2 weeks more of them developed it and some have it on their bodies now. We do water changes twice a day when feeding, use water conditioner, try to keep the water cool, etc. We started salt baths once a day and did that for a couple days. Some seemed to get better but then others seemed to get worse or just act or look funny. It's a ton of work as you can imagine so we stopped. It doesn't look like most of the pictures or descriptions we read about fungus so we want to know if we're even treating the right thing. And how they got it. We aren't breeders but this is the second clutch we've raised. Yes, our 2 are now separated so no more babies!

Those are iridophores!!! Beautiful shiny chromatophores and totally normal!

Is it normal then that more of them would develop them this late in the game (they are 3 months old)?

I'll come back and post pictures of their bodies - maybe that's a separate issue?

Absolutely normal - I have axolotls continue to show more iridophores right up to 18 months and yes they can cover the body legs and tail as well.

Interesting! We had no idea. Here's pictures of the bodies if 2 others.

Thank you! Now I feel terrible that we thought it was fungus and gave them salt baths. Glad I stopped after 2 days because it was so much work. Now I feel the need to go give them tea baths to soothe them and make up for it. LOL

Just go back to dechlorinated water.

I use Johns solution in all my tanks and tubs once babies hit 3 months which is a salt solution its a great addition to their water
