Is my axolotl healthy? Is this a fungal/bacterial infection?

I've noticed over time he's gotten more and more white patches on the gills, and now there's almost like crusties on his head near the base of his gills. (See last pic)

This has been ongoing about a year now. He's been healthy the whole time, eats voraciously, swims around, etc. I'm worried it's a minor infection that could get worse over time. Anybody familiar with this?

Thanks

The white on the gills, and elsewhere on the body, are iridophores.
Your axolotls has also a bright ring around its eyes. It is not a melanoid, so iridophores are normal.
The gills look fine.

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
