Hello. I have had my axolotl for 5 or 6 years now. When we got him as a baby his gills were totally flat behind his head, but when he became an adult and we put him in his new tank, his gills seemed to curl a little forward. We let him adjust for a while, but I found that as he has gotten older his gills have still remained kind of curled towards the front of his head. However, since he seems to eat and swim normally, his tank has all the amenities he needs and plenty of space, I have always figured that that is just how he is and probably isn't stress. I used to check his water composition levels every once in a while and they were always pretty close to perfect, although I haven't checked them this past year. It has only occurred to me now to get a second opinion on whether or not his gills are just kind of curved or if he is stressed - I would hate to find out that he has been stressed out all this time. I apologise for the bad pictures - he is a dark axolotl in a dark cubby so the reflections kind of make it difficult to see.

It’s normal for axolotl gills to change shape as they grow. If he’s eating and swimming fine, he’s likely okay. A quick water check wouldn’t hurt, but sounds like he’s happy.
