Question: Is Squishy getting sick?

Ok, new developments. Any input is helpful!

Woke up this morning, Squish was sitting on the bottom of her tank as usual, but her legs were all pointed in strange angles and she didn't appear to be moving at all. In true Kati fashion, I panicked and woke up everyone in the room to come look at her. She was very pale and there was seriously no movement. Her gills were not moving, she was not moving. I was terrified.

After about 10 minutes her gills seemed to do a small wiggle and I was like AH! She is alive!!

I have been doing water changes as often as possible and I try to take at least 20-30% of the water out and replace it every day to keep the tank clean.

I have been trying to contact my mom about whether or not it would just be better to sell her to someone or to give her to someone who can give her a better home than a ten gallon tank in a dorm room. Unfortunately, recent events have caused my mom and I to stop talking and I can not talk to her anymore. Until I talk to her I cannot in good conscious give away or sell Squishy.

Because of this I sat around for two hours today racking my brain as to what could be causing this illness, is the water quality off at the school? Is there a bacteria that is in the tank? Is the water too hot? too cold?

I sat staring at the tank and then I saw it, I am amazed that I have missed it this long.

There are small purple patches of what appears to be a jelly like substance on the side of the tank. Not many, just a few in the corners, along the bottom edges etc. I stared at it. What is this!? Then I notice purple wispy strands hanging out the bottom of the sucking part on the filter, the filter appears to be completely clogged by this purple goo.

I sat there for a good ten minutes thinking to myself what is this purple stuff and where is it coming from!

Then it hit me. THE SAND! A few months ago when I replaced Squishy's rocks with sand, I bought pretty purple sand that the pet store guy told me was perfect for aquariums.

When I brought it home and put it in the tank i noticed that it was turning the water purple, I did post a thread about it asking and Kaysie mentioned that it was calcium sand and it would dissolve into the tank.

So now it hits me, slowly over the last few months my sand has been dissolving into the tank, the sand dissolves and leaves the color floating, the color grabs on and forms these patches on the tank. The color gets a hold of little pieces of dirt and clogs the filter.

After I found this I spent an hour or two cleaning the tank, I made sure to only clean the jelly patches and leave anything that didn't look dirty so I didn't get rid of all of my healthy bacteria, the filter was a different story. I had to completely disassemble my filter, clean everything with Q-tips and wash everything. IT WAS DISGUSTING!

After everything was cleaned and not covered in purple goo I began to do a water change just to make sure all the yuck was gone. I removed all her decor from the tank and attempted to get Squish out so I could do a 100% water change. Squish had a huge panic attack which ended in a cut tail so I left her in there and just kept taking water out, putting water in, taking water out, putting water in along with trying to get most of the sand out, impossible to get all the sand out with her still in the tank. Eventually it seemed that all the disgusting-ness was getting out and I was beginning to relax and began to think maybe I could do this whole dorm room axolotl.

As I was finishing filling up the final bucket to put into the tank, I walk into the room and find Squish doing intense acrobatics...possibly seizures? After about 45 seconds she stopped and now seems fine, if not angry that most of her sand is gone and her tank is rearranged.

Advice? Anyone?

I will try to post a picture of too

Ok well hopefully Things will start to improve for your axolotl, however, even though you didn't scrub down everything you still cleaned out your filter and removed the water so you will probably have to treat your tank as though you are cycling it from the start.
Good luck and keep us posted.

So far she has sat on the bottom of the tank barely moving since I cleaned everything, if things don't start to get better I am really going to consider just selling her without telling my mom because I am so scared she is going to die!

That sucks about the sand. Sounds kind of gross.

It's not unusual for them to sit and do nothing. Mine only move when it's time to eat. As long as you're keeping her cool (under 75F or so), and you get the water quality sorted out, I wouldn't worry too much.

I really think I am going to look into selling her to someone, Jess had expressed interest in taking her, the only thing I am worried about is the shipping since I have never done it, and with Squishy seeming to be ill I am afraid that when she got there she would...well...dead...I am very worried about the whole situation and I really think things would probably be better if she went to someone who could really give her the time and effort she deserves

Here are some pictures I took about 15 minutes ago of Squishy, this is the first time she has moved all day, I got her to eat some pellets...Maybe things are looking up? I know I panic on a daily basis, this time just seemed so different. I will keep you posted, let me know what you think, does she look too skinny? Sick? Anything at all is welcome. Thanks!

She looks okay to me.

If you don't mind a suggestion though, I'd take the sand depth down to just a centimetre - this is more than sufficient for Squishy to grip and snuffle through.

In looking at your photo it looks like the sand is at about one to two inches. The deeper the depth of sand, the greater the chance of nasty gas pockets developing under the surface.

Jacq I think your eyes are deceiving you lol. Look at the second photo, the sand there is barely covering the bottom of the tank in places.
Anyway I think if I owned that little axolotl I would be happy with it. She is a nice round shape, not too fat though, the gills are fairly good.
Axolotls don't move around all that much when they get older.
I think you are most probably worrying yourself silly for nothing. She isn't floating, she hasn't got fungus, she looks fine just doing what axolotls do.......Nothing! lol.

Your axie looks great to me. Actually just fine! She's not obese and she's certainly not skinny, her skin would be all wrinkly and you'd see her ribs really well, she looks well cared for!
It seems that there is a lot going on for you and maybe your axie is just a place for you to put all your fears and concerns. My three axies are about on the six month mark and they are not active unless it's time to eat or I am messing around in the tank.
They do have their good and bad days like us. They lose their appetites and then eat ravenously for weeks. They hide while they are resting and not eating and they do their own thing the rest of the time.
Even when we are extremely neglectful (go on vacation and come back expecting to see them expired from waiting for our return...even though we've left pages of instructions on their care for our friends who are looking out for them while we are gone...) There they are, crappy water and all and happily put up with our guilt-filled efforts to make ourselves - them - feel better, over feed them, clean the water and obsess over them for weeks after. They are hearty little things, and truly as long as we are giving the minimum requirement in the care dept., they will survive. A little more care and attention and it actually makes or job easier and their lives less stressful.
In the end, if you are contemplating getting your baby a new home, something inside you is telling you something. Whatever it is, if you think it's what's best, then it's what's best.
We can all lie to ourselves but in the end, if we're not honest in our committment to those in our care, only they will suffer.
Good luck with your decision.

Squishy does seem to be doing better. I do regular water changes, about 30% twice a week. I also keep her fed with pellets every few days.

She has stopped going into her hidey vase and spends all of her time walking around the tank, sitting on the bottom, trying to climb the walls or staring at the tv. I figure this is just part of her personality and she will go into the hide when she feels good and ready.

Also she still eats very well but I haven't seen any poo in over a week. She eats every pellet I give to her but I am wondering if maybe the feeder fish from a couple weeks ago have plugged her up? I have been keeping to water very cold. (the barbarian has been over a lot so the room has been at about 60) She does however seem to be exhibiting signs of heat stress? She has funny white marks on her head at the base of her gills.

I had noticed these a good while ago but everybody on here said they may just be regular face markings. This could still be the case and I am really hoping, but I have read other posts about heat stress and it appears this could be waht she has. I will try to get some pictures.

So thats about it. Could she be constipated from the feeder fish?
Could she have heat stress?
Why won't she go in her hide?

Thanks again for all the advice
