Pinkys skin seems to lighten up from time to time not sure if it's irritated skin or just how the light shines at certain times

hehe. Pinky and Brain. I love it. What are we going to do tonight?!?

These guys look fine to me, but I would recommend a water change as their gills are curling some. If you are concerned about irritation then the first thing I would do is test the water and the second thing I would do is change it, even if the parameters are fine. Keep an eye on the parameters when they are showing signs of irritation and when they aren't and that should give you an idea of how they like their water.

Do you have a liquid test kit? (API Freshwater Master is the one I use)

What are the parameters right now? What are they about an hour after a water change?

I keep a notebook where I write down all my test results so I can see trending if it is happening. It's something you could do if you think it might help.

My wild type's coloring is really similar to Pinky's (though mine isn't GFP). She has really dark top side of her body and really light under side with light markings on her cheeks. The color of the lighter parts is sometimes a bit darker and sometimes lighter. I can say for sure that atleast in my case it isn't because of irritation, because it can occur at any time during my weekly cleaning routine. I guess it's just that she's been more or less active than normally or reacts to light on/off. Axies are curious little beings. :D

To keeper of jacks I don't have a test kit went through 3 of them with readings all off the charts but everything looking fine and doing massive water changes all the time I would take some water to different fish stores for them to check and my water was perfect so I got tired of pulling my hair out and rushing all over to be told I'm fine so I change my water on regular basis and have good filtration iv done a lot of research so long and short no I don't test the waters and can you specify what picture has the curling your saying is troubling I've read on hear from what I understand anyways that they look fine they have grown and there gills are looking a lot better than when I first got them and they have a good appetite and I did a water change yesterday and i chill the water to the same as the tank before adding I think they are fine just want opinions im new to these little monsters and want to take good care of them

And to keiko ya there is no rhyme or reason that I can see I don't think fungus can come and go in a few hours and if it's irritated I still can't see why it would come and go the temp is the same when I wake up get home and go to sleep

Personally I don't see anything wrong with them. If the gills were curled because of stress then from what I understand they should be curled a lot. Like close to their eyes. Ofcourse I've never seen that on my axies so I can't say for sure. However I do know that they move their gills a lot back and forth and to me it just looks like they are alert in some of the pictures hence the gills are slightly more upwards/forwards.

Ya these pictures are the most I've ever seen curled
