I was cleaning out my axolotl tank so I had put my axies into clear containers when I noticed one of my juveniles had a toe which split into 3:shocked: Is this normal in axolotls or is it a result of inbreeding or something? thanks in advancexD
Not exactly normal - but not unheard of either.
Axies can grow extra digits when regenerating after an injury - one of mine has 6 toes on one foot (and 3 on another!) - so a trident toe is quite possible.
Nothing to worry about. Unless he can't move his whole leg or something.
I've recently seen an axie in a pet store with 11 toes on 1 foot! I'll see if I can still find that picture.
Axies can end up with lots of little quirks like that. Someone else here on the forum had an axolotl with a trident-shaped gill! It's nothing to worry about, it just makes them all the more unique. c:
i have one Albino Axolotl that lost a leg during the cannibalize stage to a sibling and when it regrew he got some extra toes. On his back right leg he has 8 toes.
Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation
Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
