It still amazes me

I mentioned a couple of springs ago how the common frogs in my ponds always spawn a couple of days either side of the 26th March, well despite the coldest and longest winter in 30 years the first clumps appeared yesterday bang on the money.

Ive got lots of toad and a little frog spawn and the newts are beoming more active again in the garden pond.
They are in full swing at the moment up in the north of England.
Should be uploading some nice amplexing toad pics soon!

We've had some spawn, too, but had 12 frogs (including some gravid females) killed by a cat. We usually put mesh guards over the pond shallows, but we were a bit too late this year. .. Its very angering how the cats do this...and they don't even kill the frogs properly, just bite their head open and leave them writhing.

On the up side, there are lots of newts back and the cats don't seem to go for them.

I have seen a cat gulp down a huge gravid frog whole! This year I spotted a toad with three legs(missing a back one, I wonder if he goes round in circles!), I suspect that was a cat injury too!
