A friend directed me to this site a few days ago after my son's axolotl climbed out of the tank and hurt himself (see thread in sick axo forum)

We only got the axolotl a week ago. I am pretty upset that the exotic pet shop didn't give me the correct information... I had no idea about cycling or testing the ph etc... even though I specifically asked what I need to do. I wish I knew this forum existed and I would have done everything properly.

So I'm wondering if I've got an axolotl already... how do I go about getting the water right? Do I put him in a different container whilst he's sick and recovering and work on the tank now? I've searched the forum for info on how to cycle but can't find instructions, just people mentioning it. Sorry, it's information overload here. Can someone help me? I just don't want this poor little thing to suffer (his name is Aladar by the way ;) ).

Thank you in advance!

Elisabeth I answered in your other thread. By adding your axie and feeding it, your axie, to the tank, you started the cycle process. All you have to do is test the water regularly and keep a record of the results. You can get a master water test kits from the petshop (for freshwater) for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, low ph and high pH. The main ones to monitor during a cycle are the first 3.

If you keep your axie in the fridge till it's better you can sort your tank out. Basically it's cycling now. All you have to do is get the test kits, or if too expensive (they cost $60ish NZ here ) you can get the petshop to test your water every 2 or 3 days and get the results. While your axie is in the fridge no need to do any waterchanges on your tank. Did you see this link: http://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/cyclingEDK.shtml

Also, petshops very rarely give the right information and try to sell you things you really don't need; I'm lucky I had good advice before buying my babies from my little sis who owns a number of axies and also put me on this site since she's on holiday and if i get stuck at all (I'm axiesitting for her too). You don't need anything that locks the ammonia/fixes it, so if they try to sell you something just ignore them.

Thank you Heihei! You're my saviour tonight! Thank goodness!
