I put some guppies, ghost shrimp, and red cherry shrimp in a nice 10 gallon setup. I'm interested to see who, if anyone, thrives and makes it to be a meal. Hopefully someone will breed...survival of the fittest I suppose.

If they are anything like my lot, they will all survive, and reproduce. Just make sure it has lots of plants so the fry and larvae can hide. The only problem I had was when I left only one male in with all the females.

Yeah. there are a bunch of fake plants, fake sculptures, and some java moss I bought..should be enough areas to hide if needed.

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
