Juvenile didn't take his worm tonight...

I have a 3.5 inch melanoid that is normally a very aggressive worm eater. Today I moved him from a plain 10 gallon tank into one that contains play sand substrate and hideouts ect. He has never seen substrate before.
He snatched the worm a few times, spit it back and ,then quickly hid from it.
Could it be the sand that's bothering him?
