my belovid axolotl i got a week ago is acting odd i went away for the weekend and when i got back a miniout ago i noticed that he was floating up to the top and keeps tring to swim back to the bottom. should i be worried and take him to a vet?

see how he is before going to vet,
is he gulping air when he comes to the top? could be trapped wind.

No he floats to the top and try's to swim down whale floating up he will also go in his cave and float tutching the top of it. he is eating normally and seams active he is just floating fore some reason. i haven't seen him gulp air but it is possible since i was away.

Just had a word with my uncle who keeps axies, he said what Peter said trapped air. Chances are it will resolve itself.

I don't know I haven't seen him poop all day actually I am really hoping you are right. Thanks everyone for the help.

Yay thanks everyone she's fine now shes staying on the bottom her but is just a little off the ground so I think she'll be fine.

Thats either stress or the water isn't oxygenated enough. If there isnt enough oxygen in the water axies swim to the top and use the air from the atmoshpere. Get a air stone in there if that is whats wrong. If not its a bacterial infection. You can get antibiotics from the vet or you can just try and relive stress from your axie. Is the filter too powerful?is the water clean and rid of chlorine? etc etc

Lorie, there are many causes for floating. Lack of dissolved oxygen isn't one of them. Stress can cause infections that cause floating, but isn't a source itself.

I've found most axies float when they need to poo.

I'll tell my vet that coz he's giving out the wrong information then ;)

I think what Lorie was getting at was if the axie is trying to gulp air from the surface then there is a chance of air getting trapped which is true.

she started floating again. the temp is 68f and she is eating fine so i don't think it is stress. she does gulp air a lot from the surface.

one of my axies couldn't sink when he was little- used to float at the top and try to sink...he only started sinking when he began eating more solid food other than blod worms- sure it was trapped air- poor little guy!

should i attempt feeding her solids? and what is a good solid food?
