Krill?

I was looking at some frozen foods at a local pet store and I saw some frozen krill. Does anyone know if these would be good for axolotls. They have high protein and everything. Lots of people feed axies prawns so I was wondering what about frozen krill?

Krill is usually an oceanic organism isn't it? I guess if its nutritious enought to sustain whales, it should be good enough for axies.

Don't know about the taste though. Could be a bit alien to them (lol, this from someone who feeds beef heart)

Yea it is completely oceanic as far as I know. But on the package it says for all fresh and saltwater large carnivores. They have more protein than beefheart and a lot of other good stuff (can't remember specifics). Just thought I might pick some up as a treat maybe a couple times a month. I feed my axie beef heart as well but only about twice a week, and he loves cows almost as much as me!! lol

How many axies does it take to bring down a cow
rofl.gif
I can just picture it!

Yeah by all means try it. Let me know if they eat it.

i think the cows would get the axies before the axies could even have a nibble. LOL

Then, how does an axolotl catch brine shrimp? They don't, but sometimes we have to be a smidge unconventional in feeding.

my axie gave me little marks on my arm from its
small teeth. i was fiddling with something
in the tank and without me noticing she
creped up to me and Latched onto my arm
the shock made me chuck my arm out of the
tank, she was lifted out of the water
before letting go. it left me with little
teeth marks, it was quite a shock.

My axie has scared the heck out of me before too lol. Never left a mark just kind of weird lol. But dang i'd say if we got a few axies like Nathans they could probably take down a cow, sound pretty vicious. jk lol.

I'd just like to point out here I wasn't serious about axolotls killing cows. I admit, I have a strange sense of humour.

Has anyone tried the frozen krill yet?

Today while I was at the gas station to buy worms I took time to look through most of the "bait cooler" to see if they may have any potential axolotl treats.

They had pickled eels, pickled squid, and something called "fresh sand shrimp" that looked like small crawfish (or as we call them crawdads).

The crayfish looked like a good size for feeding, but I wondered "where they came from" and what they might of been eating.

Does anyone have any knowledge about feeding crayfish as an axolotl treat ?

I don't see why they wouldn't eat them, nor can I see any reason why crayfish would be bad for them (except for live crayfish). The shells will probably be difficult to digest. Thay are a lot thicker and harder than most other crustaceans used for food, so I wouldn't suggest them as a staple. They'd probably be good as a treat though.

Maybe if you split them and just fed the meat out of the insides?

Crayfish have extremely tough exoskeletons. I would think that the meat would be a good treat tho, as Joan said. But I am getting the krill tomorrow.

Ok I got the krill. I put one in the water and he jumped up and ate it as soon as I put it in! He loved it! But while I was at the store I also bought some ghost shrimp to live in the guppy tank. Can axies eat ghost shrimp?

I put ghost shrimp with my axies also. two days later there were no ghost shrimp. I guess they ate them ok - unless they really were ghosts in the first place.

Lol, well I put the ghost shrimp in with this like 8 inch loach that I have. Sucker is huge, he already at 5 of the ten I put in there lol. If there are any left over in a few days I might put one in with the axie. but here are the nutrition facts on the krill:
Crude Protein..Min. 7.5%
Crude Fat......Min. 2.8%
Crude Fiber....Max. 0.8%
Moisture.......Max 90%
and you can compare this to frozen beef heart and here is the nutrition facts on frozen beef heart:
Crude Protein...Min. 11%
Crude Fat...1.85%
Crude Fiber...0.4%
Moisture...Max 88.0%

So they have a little more fat than frozen beef heart but not a huge amount and they are a pretty well rounded food. I will probably feed him a few meals of these a week. Here is a link to see it at a site http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=8135&N=2004+6000+2146962007 But I got my "flat pack" for $4 at a local pet store.

I have loaches too

. They're only littlies though - about 2-3 inches long. I wish they'd hurry up and grow. Do you feed your loaches earthworms? What else do you feed em Grant?

I measured my loach and it is 9 inches long!! I just feed him bloodworms, frozen beefheart, and I've fed him the krill a few times now that I have it.
