Hi
This is my first post.
I have a siren lacertina which is about 30 cm long.
I'd like to know the following:
1. I changed it in a separate aquarium because it's legs were bitten off by one of my fish, I did not know this could happen, pffff. I do have have the impression it's growing back... Is this possible?
2. If yes, what should I do to help it grow?
3. How can I know how old it is?
4. Any advise on how to keep it best is welcome
5. Should we keep it separately or are their fish that are compatible?

Thanks a lot

If its legs are getting bitten off then of course they are not compatible. What kind of fish it it? Don't keep Sirens with fish or any other kind of salamander. Sometimes its wise to keep a small number of Sirens together because even can they harm each other.

1. Its legs should grow back but slowly.
2. Keep it by itself and keep the temperature cool.
3. As far as age its best if you posted a picture of the Siren.
4. These links may help. Caudata Culture Species Entry - Siren intermedia Greater Siren Fact Sheet - National Zoo| FONZ
5. Don't keep it with any other animal. Even other Sirens as tank mates might not work well.
***6. You should have done some research before you got the Siren it would have helped.

Thanks a lot for the replies!
This is encouraging!
I was not informed well, and I think it's the first time they had it in the shop.

Regarding the legs... Does it always grow back?
Thanks a lot! I'll check the links now!

Regeneration is no guarantee. Depends on how well fed and how stressed the animal is. Give it a non-stress environment and feed it a lot. Just don't over feed you don't want any water issues while your Siren might have open sores. Use methods like this and the arm should be back in a couple months.

I kept S lacertina for years. Mine (a female) was about 90 cm when she passed, due to tumors.

They do consume plant material as well as insects, worms, etc etc. Some people say this is accidental, occurring when hunting and eating other prey, but I regularly saw mine munching plants and when I'd bring it algae from outside sources it went right to it and ate some...so, draw your own conclusions.

Yes, keep it alone, Get a lage tank and do everything you can to make it escape proof. They are escape artists, and their natural behavior includes poking about everywhere. My tank was always covered with plastic coated wire mesh and weighted down,

They appreciate low lighting and places to hide.

One thing that makes keep sirens easier than many sals, is that they primarily find food by smell, and therefore you can get a varied diet into them without always having to rely on live food.

My siren was one of my favorite pets ever, not just one of my favorite salamanders ever. The whole family loved her. THey get very large, but are worthy of a large tank set up. A siren in motion is a beautiful creature, and they are very active animals.
