Larvae not able to digest live worms/shrimp, starving

I need help. I sold some white worms (Enchytraeus spp. Caudata Culture Articles - Food Items for Captive Caudates ) to a friend of mine a few months ago, who happened to be raising her first batch of offspring of an axolotl she'd gotten from me.

Right from the beginning, there were problems, with some refusing to eat at all, and strange greenish looking bellies. These died soon, (before ever having eaten the worms), one of which apparently died the first day after hatching, and a few others simply refused to eat, and died within a few days. This I assumed was some defect, when I looked online and saw that people often report a few from each batch not eating and wasting away.

The others were fed on baby brine shrimp and then a combination of baby brine shrimp and live adult brine shrimp, along with chopped white worms a few times a week, and the growth has been very slow.

At almost five months old, they still haven't reached past 1", and haven't developed any back legs yet. We were trying to narrow down what the problem might be, and I suggested that the issue might be that they weren't able to eat the white worms for some reason, and suggested chopped bloodworms instead, but she said they were eating entire white worms, as well as adult brine shrimp, but then, today she saw an axolotl pooping *live worms*.

They look a lot like the Enchtraeus species, but is it possible for an axolotl to eat a worm, and for it to come out totally undigested? Or is this some sort of parasitic nematode that just happens to resemble the white worms?

Is it possible that some sort of eggs or larvae of a parasite found their way into the compost bin, maybe hitchhiking on some scraps of fruit or veggie, and started breeding in the dirt that she adds to it, from her worm bin? If so, could that have let to the first ones dying, after the worms got in with the baby brine shrimp, which she got from the brine shrimp culture bin? Or that the earthworms in the bin were carrying some sort of parasite (although they were apparently bred in captivity)?

How could we rule out some sort of physiological problem, where they are eating but not digesting their food?

Has anyone ever seen this before, where they died, mysteriously, refused to eat, and had green stomachs? We've been looking into axolotl anatomy, and the greenish part seems to be in the general area of the spleen.

Also, has anyone ever noticed that axolotls which have albino genes tend to grow a lot faster than other axolotls? Could this have to do with them having been produced by hybridizing with tiger salamanders, originally?

Before we discovered that they were passing live worms, my theory was that they were just so slow to grow because this line are relatively smaller (9-10" adults versus 12-14" adults) and relatively slower to grow, like mine had been.

This is the first time that their line (with albino relatives) has crossed with my line (no albino relatives), so in that case, could the hybrid genes have mixed badly with the pure A. mexicanum genes, causing congenital defects?

If this is a parasitic issue, what would you recommend to rid them of the parasites? Panacur (fenbendazole)? Any suspects on which they would be, if they did turn out to be parasites, based on the photos? If it's some other parasite inside of them, causing their insides to be damaged, any ideas on what that might be?

They look smaller than white worms should be, to me. Here they are on a penny, for size comparison, although these may just be juveniles.


One thing that does strike me though, is that the male who fathered this clutch was from my own first batch, and they were very hard to raise, for me. I struggled immensely getting them past 1 inch, and was only able to do it by chopping bloodworms into tiny, tiny pieces (like 1 mm) and mixing it up with the baby brine shrimp and microworms (Panagrellus redivivus).

For some reason, baby brine and microworms just didn't do it, even though I was feeding them 5+ times a day, and they had nice orange bellies. They refused to grow, and were starving to death, one by one, no matter how often I fed them.

It seems too strange of a coincidence that these ones would also be stuck at the same size, and be gradually dying, the way mine were before that. They must have been close to this age too, when I finally tried the finely chopped bloodworm paste thing.

These new guys are apparently refusing anything except brine shrimp at this point (and they are also apparently eating white worms, which I am now wondering if they could have possibly injured the guts, by wiggling around too much inside).

***UPDATE*** Now she has just seen a live brine shrimp exit from the anus of one who is either dead or close to death. What is going on here?!

I can see that no one has weighed in. I really have no idea what is going on except that there is something wrong with them genetically, and they may well just be doomed (sorry).
Have you tried blackworms? Minced nightcrawlers? Maybe give them a go.
 
So far, they've eaten only baby brine shrimp and little bits of chopped white worm and whole baby white worms, that I know of. Yes, I am also thinking something is wrong with them genetically.

We don't have access to blackworms here in Canada at this time of year, but minced nightcrawlers is an idea. At 1", they are of course too small for nightcrawlers, but the live foods seem to just crawl right through them, and maybe if it were chopped up really finely, so that it only barely moved at all, it would be small enough for them to eat, but big enough to give them some nutrition. I found something earlier today when I was searching for some kind of answer, on the subject of a lethal gene in regards to albinos crossed with mels. Do you happen to know where I could find out more about this? I know of some other lethal genes, but this one is new to me.

Your wild type offspring are compulsory carriers of both albino and leucistic. If crossed with golden albino not carrying leucistic half the offspring will be golden. If crossed with leucistic not carrying albino half the offspring will be leucistic. If two of them are crossed then you will get the ratio one white albino (leucistic +albino) two golden albinos, two leucistics and one wild type. This assumes other possible recessives such as melanoid or axanthic are not present or lethal recessives distort the ratios..."

I did message the person who posted, and requested more information, but the sooner the better, if you or anyone you know of might be able to clarify things at all, that would be fantastic.
 
Some more information:


Nov 15: 70 larvae hatch, one dead, (hatched premature). Some apparently looked twisted inside of the eggs, and these didn't hatch.

December 11th, visible black tip on the tail of a wild. (this we are guessing is the result of an opportunistic infection, most likely set in after being nipped by the others. It cleared up after they were separated)

December 14th: 20 dead, 50 left.

December 17th, tails healed. No more deaths.

December 23, visible green belly in an albino, not eating.

December 29th, 3 or 4 dead, having never eaten. Cause of death probably starvation, possibly due to a deformed gut. Visible green bellies. (possibly enlarged spleen?)

Jan 3, all albinos are now dead. about 15-25 out of 60 were albino.

Feb 11th, White worms (E. albidus) and brine shrimp seen passing out of the anus, still alive.

*The white worms and brine shrimp have passed through the axolotls digestive system, and are still alive*

3 axolotls left yesterday, now, only two are left. The gut and back end of the last one to die appear to be hollow, like a cavity.

The axolotls are nearly four months old, (not five months, as I said in the original post) and are only about 1 inch, despite feeding constantly, and she has raised many healthy larvae before now.


Could this be a "lethal gene"? Is there any sort of hope for treatment if so, and if not, what else could it possibly be? Could it be environmental? Is it worth trying an anti parasitic medication, just to see?
 
I am sorry this is happening to you. I have raised a few batches of axoltols (wild types, white albinos, golden albinos, and leucistic) and have not run into the problem you are describing.

If it is a parasite, you are going to be the best off having a vet recommend treatment. I am not sure what could kill the parasite without killing your juveniles.

It seems that I always have some hatch out that just don't eat (I feed baby brine shrimp). Those poor little guys end up starving to death... Sucks, but what can you do? Once the hind legs grow in, I feed thawed frozen blood worms soaked in Selecon with the occasional frozen adult brine shirmp. I only feed once a day.... I would love to feed more often but that is all I can manage. Once they get in the 1-2 inch range, I start feeding pellets as well.

I do have the occasional one that does start out eating but just does not end up growing nearly as fast as the others (have a wild type right now like this, he is 1/3 the size of the others). My only explanation is a genetic defect as I offer plenty of food. Sometimes they make it, but often they perish.

IME, the wild types grow the fastest , and the white albinos are the ones that grow the slowest. If I want any white albinos, I have to separate them from the rest so they don't get cannibalized.

Your images are not working for me for some reason so I am not sure about the green belly, but that is not something I have seen. Unfortunately, my money is on genetic defect... I would not breed those parents again...
