It took me years to find some, but I bought a clutch of eggs over the summer from an acquaintance in the Midwest. I watched the eggs being removed from the breeders' tank! They've been slow growing in my basement and are almost ready to become fully formed newts.
The eggs were laid on June 28th. They hatched over a 3 week period around 72-75F and I've been raising them in individual cups since. Temps were at 70-75F for the first few months but have slowly fallen to about 56F. I think that's why they've taken so long to get towards metamorphosis. But they are getting close and I'm getting excited to see the little orange hands!
Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
