Lissotriton vulgaris courtship...

My Lissotriton vulgaris have been courting. They are in a 30 gallon tank stocked with plants, mossy land areas and thriving daphnia. Here is the male with his webbed back feet and crest for impressing female newts:











Here's the female resting on land, constantly chased and fanned by the male when she's in water:








Here's the male tail fanning her, sending hormones her way...





He got lucky, she liked his style, so... one morning I found eggs in the tank:











I have 6 eggs in the plastic tupper-wear, will keep the thread updated... to be continued...

Congratulations!

My L.v.ampelensis have been breeding like rabbits for about a month now. Once they start laying eggs they won't stop!

Good luck rearing the larvae.

Nice photos. What are the floating plants? I was planning on buying some more frogbit but I would rather have a plant than can support a newt near the water line.

I'm not sure what the plant name is, I got it from a local aquatics shop. The newts certainly seem to prefer it over the elodea in the tank, which has thinner more narrow leaves, but they do still lay in the elodea.
2 larva have just hatched this morning, the shelless artemia(brine shrimp eggs) should be hatching soon too, maybe a little early as the larva will still be surviving on their yolk. I will have a couple of bowls hatching them on the windowsill so I always have food for the larva.
