Hey, does anyone know how likely it is for a long-toed salamander to escape from this? I leave the lid off all the time. I had them in a smaller tank and I have seen them "crawl" up the side as far as their tail would support them, but that was always as far as they got. Would they be intelligent enough to go up a corner instead? thanks

I'd say it's 100% likely that they could escape from an aquarium with no lid. If there is a lid that allows even the tiniest gap, they will find it and escape.
In fact, I would go count them now, to see if they are all still there.

Thanks Herpin Man, long story short, I've had 4 of them for about 8 months. In November, a few days after we came back from a trip, the smallest one disappeared. I thought another one ate him. Perhaps he escaped?

The reason I asked was because about a week ago, the largest one went missing, but I found him now. It appears that he was stuck under the large slab of rock and got quite a bit thinner.

So do you think I should get a lid then? I could make one that is esentially a one inch lip around the entire top.

Yes, you should have a lid. Preferably one that allows light for your plants, at least in the middle.
