can a veterinarian out there tell me what course of study i need to follow to become a vet

Most larger universities will have a pre-vet program that will include the prerequisites needed to enter a veterinarian program. Generally what you will need is a lot of biology courses, anatomy and physiology, chemistry up to organic or biochemistry and a lot of internships or other experience like volunteering at a vets.

To become a veterinarian requires a lot of schooling. You're looking at your standard 4 year undergraduate program (usually a biology major) and then another 2-5 years after that in a post graduate program. Entrance into the post grad program can be very competitive and experience and good grades will be very beneficial, especially experience.

yeah i've been doing some research on the whole veterinarian thing

I am looking into this as a possible career move myself and have found that volunteering is a great move. As Abrahm said, It gives you great experience you need. Job shadowing and internships will give you a real world sense of what is all involved as well. Which is a must. The great thing about volunteering and job shadowing is you can do them pretty much any time you are available and at younger age.

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
