hey all, just wondering if maggots would be suitable to feed my axie?? they are perfect size and i have access to alot!!. any suggestions are welcome.

If they come from a reasonably clean source (like a bait shop, not a pile of poo), then yes. I've fed fly larvae (maggots) to a lot of my salamanders, including axies.

ok, thanks jennifer.

yes, there are many possible food sources for axolotls.

You couldn't get me to touch a maggot with a 10 foot stick.

I have a terrible Phobia of fly Maggots... very long story.

I'll stick to the food sources I'm already feeding to my Axies

.

yes i also consider maggots disgusting, i will feed them, if necessary but not if i don't have to.

well if u dont like maggots, this will make u sick lol, my dad recons when they lived in England and used to use em for bait, they used to put em in there mouths to warm them up b4 using them, to make them more active lmao, dont know how true it is

if u know the source there feeding on IE : fish frames, there not dirty, u can buy also em in any bait shop here too, come in plastic food containers in saw dust mmmmmmmm

Rob... I haven't had breakfast yet. Now I don't want breakfast... Yuck...

Rob - what you said about putting the maggots in the mouth to make them warm is true

All the people who I know who fish here in sunny old England do that everytime they fish.

we all moved to Australia in about 1973
ten pound pom i think they used to call us lol
"i was 5" b4 moving we lived in "Leicestershire"
i dont remember anything about England, only nearly drowning in the pool on the boat on the way over lol, glad my parents made the move cause i love Australia and consider myself Australian, not English, the only thing is, they say if i get naturalised i have to have have my brain taken out
so think i'll stay a pom lol J/K

I hope to move to Australia once I've finished my degree. Got all the paper work ready etc can't wait

Confused about the 'naturalised' statement??

when u become naturalised u give up ur English citizenship and become a fully fledged Aussie
"which i still havent" lol 32 yrs down the track
i'm still classified as a british citizen....

In response to warming maggots in your mouth. I can verify 100% that every angler worth his salt has had to do this during the winter at some stage. We the hardy Britts go fishing in some quite unbelievable conditions here. Not meaning our European cousins don't but I have not fished on the continent to know if they follow the practice.

I have personally fished in a blizzard and caught several fish mid storm. I have started fishing on ground so frozen that the basket had to be hammered through the crust, then as the day progressed and things thawed had to pull the basket back out of sludge to be able to go home.

The only thing I would say about them as food is they have a very thick skin and little nutritional content, but that said food is food.

ok i used to be a pretty hardcore fisherman, and i'm a pretty hardcore sort of bloke "but" i just couldn't bring myself to putting maggots in my mouth for no fish ! lol
u have the weather to put up with we have the numerous deadly animals sea and land
happy.gif
but hey how exciting would it be if everything was perfect and danger free
happy.gif
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

P.S. they call maggots "Gents" where i live lol
dont ask me why ?
