Question: Magical disappearing fungus(?)

The other day I noticed some white fluffy stuff on one of my axies gills, I put my hand in there to see if I could brush it off but it seemed to be attached so I didn't want to tug at it.

At that point I came to the conclusion that it was probably fungus, but I had to rush off to a family party so I had no time to take any action and I decided to sort it the following day.

When I returned in the morning this white fluffy growth was no-where to be seen, now I'm not sure if it was fungus at all.

Tldr; Is it possible the fluffy growth was something else or is fungus prone to dropping off at random?

I'm wondering if I should really be taking some action for any left over or if there's no point stressing the little guy if it was just something maurauding as fungus.

I used to see this from time to time when i kept axolotls, it usually meant they were stressed in some way from high temps or high nitrates etc. i never treated them for it and they always recovered very quickly on their own. I would check the water quality and temperature are ok.

It is quite possible that youe axie scratched off the fungus himself.

Or it could have been something else, and it fell off. Sometimes peeling skin can look like fluffy fungus.

Either way check your water quality and temperature, keep an eye on him, if you see it again get the salt bath ready.
