The newly acquired male is very skinny and in comparison to the female lying underneath him, he looks like a twig. Luckily he has started feeding already and will be putting some weight on soon.

I wouldn't worry about the male's weight, that's one huge female you're comparing him to! I always think if the hip bones aren't visibly sticking out then the animal is a healthy size, especially with Tylototriton because females are almost always much better built than males
Good luck with them! :)

Thanks. The male is a wild specimen so he's naturally slim I guess.

Heads up!
The male is obviously growing stronger and chubbier and accepts a whole range of food from crickets to fish to worms.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
