I'm pretty sure one of my males has started dropping s'phores. But he was 2" when I got him August 20th so surely he's way too young??? He's been floating a lot recently and frantically trying to reach the bottom. I don't want to remove him from the tank because one day he's fine then the next he'll be floating and so on, so I think constantly removing him will be even more stressful?? But if he's reached sexual maturity so early cos this be why he's having problems?

I'm not sure about the spermatophores all I can say is that I read somewhere that males can reach maturity at as young as 6 months old. As for the floating they just gulp up air and float around I have 2 who love doing that too and they are perfectly fine. Just watch them and enjoy I sometimes give mine a bit of a back rub when they do that :)

This is what I think is a s'phore. Plus his 'area' is a bit open

Doesn't look like a spermatophore to me. And your axie looks like a very young male, not fully mature yet.

Oh, that's not the axolotl. But they are the same age. But the other one is a lot bigger it eats way more

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
