Measle died i think it was gravel!!!!!!!!!

found measle earlier, i have not had him that long, but i had noticed that when i got him he was pooing gravel but eating fine, then he stopped pooing and eating very little, water fine, leushus is fine (lonely) they got on really well. no signs of fungus healthy looking not thin, what a shame i will ring pet shop tomorrow and say what i think, because i think he was in their a while i have done a just over half water change, should i take leushus out and start again just incase would be really sad if i lost him?

sorry for your loss isobel (friggen pet shops!)well if it was gravel (only was to find out is do a autopsy) there wasnt much you could do. id say he pooed the small ones out and the big ones blocked him up when he tried? leave leushus be, dont re-do the tank unless you know for certain it was viral/bacterial/whatever its called lol. hope this helped

do you think if it was water related they would of both died? or measle was an air taker could this have something to do with it? leushus never seems to go up for air i have pump and air bubble thing, live plants. just shocked as measle seemed the healthier looking,humm mystery, i dont fancy cutting him open to see if it was gravel but thats the only thing i can think of as i still picking gravel poo out of tank i got him mid november.

it could have been air- did anyone spray anything around? pretty unlikely though. if it was water related im sure leushus would be showing signs as well. i guess gravels the obvious answer then, of course it could have been internal but unless you chop him (i could never do that to a pet so i dont blame you) i dont think we have any sure fire way of telling

That's a shame about measle.

It seems when an axolotl has swallowed gravel they get bloated and float a bit. Did yours do that?

Basically just don't keep gravel it's too risky. buy sand if you have a siphon to clean stuff off it or else have a bare floor, they don't mind, and also a large rock for them to play on is a good idea.

i didnt have him on gravel, he came from shop with gravel, i have always used sand. i went back to shop after a phone call to tell them he had died and was plesantly suprised that they had been moved to bare bottom tanks, so i decided to get a new one he is very dark beautiful gills and a deformed front leg (regrown i think) he was starving so had 3 worms before i put him in with leushus, they had a bit of a moment but seem fine now, i have named him issac as i was listening to madonnas new album when i brought him home.

Yeah gravel seems to cause a number of deaths in the axolotl word. I just wouldn't risk it anymore.

Isaac sounds like a nice little Axolotl. A deformed leg could be caused by a number of things but if he had grown up in a tank full of other variable sized axles then it is quite possible that they had a munch. Not that it's a problem at all.
