I have just set up a tank (on about my fourth day now) with an albino, black melanoid and a golden :)

The albino is called Lancelotl, golden is called Bax (which is short for battle axe) and my black one is called toothless!

The black one is much healthier then the other two as the black one was bought new and the two others were much less healthy and their gills are much smaller :( They are going for breathes frequently but getting better!

They are getting much healthier however with lots of TLC (and water changes) they are getting better!

Here is my whole tank set up, Bax swimming for air and the trio!

I'm sure they will be perfectly happy and healthy in no time, I know how much work and love you have put into them! :D

I would suggest a couple more hides/plants though. A good rule of thumb is 2 hides per axie.. the tank looks a little open at the moment.

As for sexes, it's a little hard to tell at the moment.. they may need a bit of growing/care before you can tell. I thought my adult Banana was female for months, then one day - BAM he was male.
Toothless to me looks like a possible male just waiting to bloom. ;) Maybe Lancelotl as well.
I'm thinking Bax could be female - but I'm not positive on this.

haha BLT Sarah . . I too was expecting them to be called bacon, lettuce and tomato . . you probably could manage that actually, when I first saw the pictures without reading I guessed that toothless was called lettuce, Bax - tomato and lancalotl was Bacon . . . good names though!

I like the dinos, they go well with the axies . . they look good together though, nice bunch!

Hahahaha I know it is confusing, I think of it as BLT is their collective name and they all have single names :) they are all settling in great! Lancelotl is even starting to grow some of his gills back!!! They are a beautiful deep red :) :)

I know I'm getting one more hidey hole and are there any other suggestions? Or just more fake plants and piping??

Some more piccies!! Bax doing an intense nose dive, then crawling off her rock and the trio again :)

I love the 1st picture . . it looks like they are all running away form the dino

My other half is super jealous of your dino toys! I blacked out the back and sides of my tank and also I have a black cover that I made to slide on, just to make it a bit more cosy and dark for them

Definitely get plants, mine love them they sit in them all day everyday, hardly ever bother with their hides

It depends how old they are, they might have some more "growing" to do, but Bax looks like a female, Lancelotl looks like a developing boy and Toothless looks like a distinctive male.

good to hear those gills are coming back

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
