After an almost 2 month wait I've finally got my new Axolotl... He's name is Tove and he's almost 7 inches long and looking really healthy

(S)he is a beauty! (Lol, what gender do you know?)

Well I'm not 100% on what gender... it isn't really my area of expertise haha. My best guess is that he's a male

Ok, must have to wait til it gets older! it'll be easier to tell. If it has a small bump on cloaca, it is female. If it has a swollen cloaca then it is a male. But if you ust didn't know what the hell it looks like, you can go to this page: All About Axolotls: Male or Female?
and just compare your axy to the picture.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
