I've bought in Germany Mercurochrom-Jod Losung, but it includes 10% Jod
(1 ml Losung enthalt:arzneilich wirksamer Bestandteil:
100 mg Povidon-Jod /Moleculargewicht 44.000/ mit 10% verfugbarem Jod
Sonstige Bestandteile:Natriumhydroxid,Wasser

As I know the jod is poisonous .I wonderit Ishould use it to clean up the water.
I'm not able to find the pure Mercurochrom
Do you know where I may find it?

Using merchurchrome is not something I would ever use. Iodine is toxic to amphibians. It should only be used on small areas of skin, and in very small amounts.

What is wrong with the axolotl? There are probably safer treatments available.

I think so
.In Poland I can't buy pure Mercurochrome.
In Germany Mercurochrome is only with jod.
Where can I buy pure Mercurochrome?
I can't need now.but I think if I need it I like to have under the hand next time.

Jennifer, why would you not use mercurochrome?
It is recommended by not only John Clare, but Peter Scott and the Indiana University Axolotl Colony for the treatment of bacterial and fungal problems.

I'm no expert but I trust these guys are, and I trust you are as well.. so I am a little confused.

Mercurochrome contains mercury and is no longer sold in the US for this reason. It is still controversial as to whether the mercury in it poses any danger to humans or not. Mercury is considered to be highly toxic to amphibians. There are other less-potentially-toxic alternatives that I would choose... plus the fact that I cannot buy it here.

I figured out that "Jod", referred to by Beatra above, is "iodine". Iodine-containing medications have also been used on amphibians, although iodine is toxic to them also. I am not enough of an authority on amphibian medicine to say one should or should not use either mercurochrome or iodine, I would just say that I would not.

ok fair enough I guess, but still if mercury is highly toxic for amphibians, why would a product that contains mercury be even recommended? The potential for the less informed to overdose is high one would think, but I see no warnings???
Even though it is listed in the "List of Reportedly Safe and Unsafe Remedies/Treatments" http://www.axolotl.org/health.htm
Very confusing..................

I read about Mercurochrome in www.axolotl.org in this :List of....."
But only about pure Mercurochrome.
Jod is very toxic for amfibian-I know.
And what about pure mescurochrome
.John write-if mercurochrome is very very -good-for desynfection
My mercurochrome with jod is not good for my axis-I know, and what about pure mercurochrome?.Where can I buy pure mercurochrome?
I know if no jodid salt is the best.
