hi my axolotl Austin died today, he had been morphing for approx2/3 weeks, he had lost all his gills, grown eye lids, long claws, his head shape had changed he kept shedding his skin and climbing out of the water onto his platform. every thing was going well then he started floating on his side and later on his back. he seemed to put up a good fight but now as died. my question is do many die during the morping process? if not why would he day water and temp perfect tested twice daily??
Please can anyone help we are devistated

Linda, morphed axolotls don't have claws or eyelids. What water quality parameters did you test?

Also, Linda you've inserted the wrong file. Use the upload attachment button at the bottom of the page if you want to upload a picture (it may need to be compressed or resized before uploading). What was your tank temperature?

Thank you for your reply, but I think Austin was changing, he was totally different, Apart from his fins slowly disappearing into the back of his head, his eyes bulged out and he did seem to develop eyelids, when he was sitting out of the water, which he did for up to twenty minutes at a time, he would seem as though he was winking. His body shape also changes his head becomes more rounded and also his skin had changed it seemed to be firmer and thicker. Most interesting his toes became much longer and his legs were getting thicker. The most significant change was that he developed nostrils and when he was out of the water you could see him breathing rather like a frog.

The perimeter we kept was
GH-General Hardness 180
KH-Carbonate 180
PH-7-0 to 7.5
NO2-Nitrate 0
NO3-Nitrate 0
Tank Temp kept between 60-68 F

My tank was 24x12x12 inches, with the water near the top, when I thought Austin was changing I dropped the water to about 6 inches and build a platform up to the level of the water so he could swim onto it if he wanted to. At the bottom of the tank I had a few medium sized stones too big to swallow and moved these around often to release any trapped debris. I was in the process of buying sand. I had a filter which was working well.

linda.....my monster baby is having the same thing happen

eyes are no longer sunk in but raised aover the head with rims. face shape has changed and even the way he moves is becoming different.

Linda, my best guess would have been that it drown. But if you built a large platform, and it could find it (these guys aren't the smartest when it comes to swimming) then I just don't know. I'm sorry for your loss.
