What lovely ladies! Are the males more colorful? I have a Tylototriton newt of my own, but he's the type with raised orange warts (called an Emperor newt, but I'm not sure of the species name).
actually david they are pretty much the same-tylos dont have much colour dimorphism, some are pretty hard to sex. but i forgot-since you mentioned shanjings (your emperor) i had forgotten to post 2 ok photos i got of them-i need to check the setting on my camera as the latest photos are a bit grainy and im wondering their pixel recording size--none the less when i come in the door all my shajings come out of hiding and start milling around the land end waiting to be fed. i took these 2 shots of them last night
alan-ive got one of the set up-its not really worth another post, like i said these arent very good photos. here is their tank from the front side.
they have about 2-3 inches of water in the whole tank-there is a sloped area at the other end that has charcoal on the bottom and is covered over with gravel. on top of this to restrain the sides are the 2 sand stone slabs. they have the cork bark log to crawl into when they want to be completely dry (they all can fit in there) and the jew was just replanted and will take a while to grow to fill the other area-this allows for a refuge to dig through that is also off the gravel. depending on evaporation, as the water level adjusts the rocks will be completely dry except for the lowest side -or mostly wet except for the plant area. this plant grows fast and will root very well in really wet areas.
here is another photo i have of the shanjings-i liked it because of the lay out-it reminds me of a slow shutter photo but also a little of the concept of a cubist painting.
