Morphs

Over the weekend, I became mum to two morphs. Since this is the first time raising these little guys from morphing.

So a few questions:
- what's better: pinhead crickets, fruit flies, spring tails, etc? I only plan on feeding these guys little stuff until I can get them to eat earthworms. They've been eating brine shrimp and blackworms quite happily.

- since the two morphs still have gill remnants, I'm cautious about moving them into a terrestrial setup. Should I wait until they lose their gills completely, or should I make something for them with a shallow dish or such?

It'd help if you mentioned which kind of tylo you've become mum to..
If they are verrucosus I would suggest leaving them in the water for as long as they're willing to stay.. my 10cm morphs still haven't left the water yet and eat worms. (they've upgraded from chopped earthworms to whole earthworms).

Verrucosus. I've got them in a tilted tub, so one end is out of water, and the two morphs are hanging out in the dry spot. They're about 2.5 cm.

Maybe you'll have more luck than I had with morphs that leave the water. Try and see if they're willing to go back into the water? 1-2 inches of nice "warm" water (20-22 celcius) heavily loaded with plants and plenty of chopped worms.

They don't freak out when placed back in the water, and will go into the water to hang out ontop of these plastic plants I have that are sticking out. Still not eating, but plenty plump, so I'm not terribly worried yet. The thing with blackworms is that they'll wrap around and hide in anything that is available, so it's hard to feed blackworms in anything but a bare tank.

Any suggestions?

chopped earth worms in the water. They can suck those pieces in. It's the favourite way of eating for mine.

The only worms I have are nightcrawlers, and they're definately too big to feed. The worms are as big around as the newts! I might have to slice them down the middle, rinse them off, and feed them. slivers of earthworm in tomato sauce, anyone?

mmmm my favorite!
While you're at chopping earth worms up so small, have you considered trying frozen/thawed blood worms? They seem to be quite an appetizing food source for the newts, and trust me they taste much better in tomato sauce than earthworms, its all about the visual color mixtures really :hurls:

Not a huge fan of bloodworms. Might be worth it to pick some up though. The axolotls ate them when they were younger, but they were messy. I might try them sauteed with some mushrooms.

Try a few chopped red wrigglers? I just rinse off the yellow goo before dumping them into the water with them.

Well, chopped earthworms were a flop. But I'll keep trying.

Found one belly-up this morning. One of the attempti-morphs. Looks like drowning, even though he still had pretty substantial gillstalks.
