I saw "Beaked Moss (Kinderbergia Oregana)" at the store today. I'm wondering if it's safe to use? It'd be for s.s. terrestris and notophthalmus viridescens (red efts). Thanks =)

I googled it and it looks to be a very nice forest floor moss which should be ok for use in a terrarium. Some bog mosses can be quite acidic but it doesn’t appear to be a bog moss. Is it alive or dry?

It looks fine. It's not a brand that's available over here. If you're unsure, or if nobody else chimes in, it may be wise to test it. When you're at the store pick up a ph test kit. Soak some of the moss over night and test the ph of the water the next day.

Yes, that's what I wanted to do. Unfortunately, I have to buy the big bag in order to get any. I don't want to spend $10 just to test it and find out that it's too acidic. I'm not sure what the pH level should be under for moss? 6?

You don't want the moss to be acidic so the pH shouldn't be changed noticeably by addition of the moss. A pH under 6 would be quite acidic and something to be avoided.

To best test the pH of the moss you should allow a bucket of distilled/RO water sit out overnight so that it will equilibrate with atmospheric CO2 which forms an acid with water and its formation and dissipation can change pH. Take the pH of this water and then add the moss and let it soak for 24 hours. After this time period test the pH of the water again. There should be no appreciable change in pH. Large drops in pH would indicate acidic compounds in the moss and increases would indicate alkaline compounds

Using distilled, RO or other very soft water is important as there are compounds in hard water that act as buffers. This makes it difficult for the acid from the moss to change the pH and acidic moss may not leach out enough acids at once to change it, especially when the water has significant buffering capabilities.

Got it! Thanks so much. I'll see if I can get a sample of the moss. I don't want to buy the big bag and be stuck with it if it's too acidic.

Growing moss

On the subject of moss. Does anybody know the best way to attach and grow moss on artificial rock surfaces? Thanks
