Moved: June's axolotl won't eat (temperature)

We are lucky my parents live next door so they will come over every morning and turn the air con on and leave it on all daY, so that shouldn't be a problem. I would not ask my parents to do the water changes or feed him as they are scared that they might kill him. So they water changes will be ok every 2nd day , thats a relief!!!. Thank you Kapo.

Gosh you are lucky having parents so close to do that, wish we had air con!

Charlie seems to be managing the heat rather well. Today it got to 42c the sane for tomorrow, we have the air con running 24/7 keeps the house cool. Charlie's water temp is 23c (always is ). He is still eating well, which i hope is a good sign. Anything else we need to do Kapo, while we are away??. Friend will check the levels every 2nd day. Thank you.

Hi June, sorry missed this other night! You've pretty much got it covered! How long are you away for? We were away for a month and my sister was axie sitting for us (I'm returning favour while she's working down in South island). You could leave him this website address or send him the link by email, so if he has any concerns or worries while away he can just jump onto the net and ask ! Otherwise if you off on holiday, have a good one...enjoy yourselves. :D

Thanks Kapo, we are away for 1 week. Thank you for all your help!

Hi Kapo, we are back, took Charlie's water to be tested again, readings.....ph 7.2, ammonia 0.5, nitrite o. This tank has not yet cycled!!!, how long does it take??. I am still doing the daily water changes and Charlie is eating well. Thank you.

Hi June, hope you had a great break. Charlie sounds like he's improving with hi. what's your nitrate reading? One of ours took up to 8 weeks, you're about 5.5 weeks.

Hi Kapo, nitrate is 0. Well if it can take 8 weeks i am almost there, i'm not giving up now that we have come this far!

How often have you been testing? Just that your nitrate should have risen. It sounds like your tank is in early stages of cycling. Nitrate should have a higher figure than 0 when it is cycled and ammonia and nitrite should be 0.

I test the ammonia levels every day, nitrite every 3rd day, nitrate once a week. So does this mean this is going to take a lot longer? The ammonia level has never been greater than 1, the other two have always been 0. Thank you Kapo.

It just seems odd that your nitrite and nitrate haven't risen in your tank, which needs to happen. Even when we had our axies in the tank and did the daily changes while cycling our nitrite still rose, probably about 3rd/4th week.

Hi June, unless some one else advises something else, only thing i can think of is to remove Charlie, put him in a separate container if you can keep him cool, do daily changes on container. Dont waterchange your tank, any poo that appears in container throw it in the tank - maybe things will improve. That's really only thing I can think of.

Thanks Kapo, will give it a try. Will keep you posted as to the tank progress.

Hi Kapo. had to put my plans on hold, we were given a female axie on sat (the owner was going to flush it) so she is in the tank with Charlie, my problem is ....she won't eat. She was on live brine shrimp and i am trying to get her to eat beef heart. She hasn't eaten since we have had her. Charlie is doing well. She has been on her own for 5 weeks in a small tank. Do you think she is just getting used to her new surrounds?. I am a little worried that she won't eat. Thanks Kapo.

She may be used to just eating live food. Ours get a bit stroppy/ignore us when I offer them beef heart (unless they're very hungry). Are you able to find out where he got the brineshrimp or find a source of live food like live bloodworm, blackworm or earthworms?

And do you still feed a fingernail sized amount to Charlie (is that a long nicely manicured sized or normal sized one :D - mine are short!)? Sorry, I probably need a reminder I jump in and out of threads but how big is Charlie and is your new girl (thought of a name yet?) the same size?

Ours are rather large adults and eat a whole worm sometimes two, every 2-3 days; usually its every 3-4 days but with the warm weather they've been hungry.

And how is your nitrate?

Also, are you doing daily changes or every 2 day changes?

Charlie now eats 1/2 a beef block every day!. We named our female Scarlet (as she has so many scars). They are both about 18cms long. I will try and find some brine shrimp for Scarlet. Do i hand feed her them??. I hand feed Charlie the beef heart, he is showing off in front of his new tank mate (typical male)!

. She is very tame, her old owner used to handle her every day, i won't do that, she needs time to settle in. How long can they go without eating? i don't want her to get sick. Nitrate is still 0, i am doing daily water changes all other levels are still the same. Thanks Kapo. (that would of been a normal sized nail but now he's eating a lot more)

I've never fed beef heart cube, seen them sold in the petshop (asked today to have a look as so many people feed them and frankly I'd rather deal with real meat or worms)! We feed beef heart cut into wormlike strips, with all fat and tendons of usually during winter months (to cold to dig/muck around the wormfarm then!). We keep a 1/4 of an beef heart cut up into cubes for all our pets cats/dogs/axies!. We then slice a few pieces of the cube while still frozen, returning remainder to freezer, and slice the slices into wormstrips.

I assume with brineshrimp you just chuck them in and let her chase them! I do it with the baby brineshrimp for my babies no prob? Maybe Charlie will take a liking to them too, and be a variation on his diet.

Just wondering do you have live plants in your tank? Think someone said that can effect nitrate (not sure if that's good or bad).

Hi Kapo yes we have live plants in the tank, i think that's a good thing it helps keep the levels down. Just wondering what to do with the tank? it's not cycled yet, i have never know a tank to take so long!, I will keep up the daily water changes and just see what happens. Charlie seems happy, so it can't be too bad for them ( i hope). They are such beautiful creatures, i will let you know if Scarlet eats the shrimp today. Thank you Kapo.

I don't know much about live plants in tanks, but I do know that they use the nitrate - hence you'd have lower readings. A few owners in the UK have really high nitrate readings on their tapwater so use live plants to bring it down when added to their tanks. Your tank may very well be cycled and what nitrates are being produced are being consumed by your plants. Ease of on the waterchanges and test it in a couple of days to see if the nitrate rises. You could always start a new thread based on live plants and nitrate usage and how it effects your cycling; and someone more experienced in this area will be able to help.
