Hello!

I found out that my axolotls tail was ripped 1-2 days ago and I wasn’t sure what to do as the internet says “let them be they will heal it themselves “ but I was scared and confused as some say a infection or something could develop in it.

I read that salt baths could help, but I didn’t do it as that was the problem my other axolotl died.

I’m not sure how big my aquarium is since in Germany it’s 150cm length and I don’t know what else. I do water changes 1-3 times a month and clean my filter whenever I think it’s best for them. I feed them 1-2 Canadian worms and sometimes pellets ( I feed them based on their mood ) . Please help me!

the chances are that one of your axolotls nipped the other, which isn't unusual or rare, it can take a long time to heal but it will heal without the need for any intervention, if there are concerns about infection then using either holtfreters or a small amount of salt (ie..2g per litre) will help stave of infection, removing for salt baths when there is no sign of infection can be quite stressful, try also using almond/catappa leaves in the tank.
as for size etc.. Calculator

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
