Hello! I'm getting back into the hobby after not really keeping amphibians for a few years. I'm from California and I've wanted to keep salamanders for a while. Ive kept dwarf african clawed frogs and eastern newts before but had to give them away when we had to get our house tented for termites a few years ago. I plan to get some more as im setting up a small planted tank. I like to design bioactive setups and I've created a bioactive terrarium for my leopard gecko. The other amphibians I'm interested in keeping are lungless salamanders and newts.

Hi there Jade. Welcome to the site. I am just returning after 10yrs myself. I had 3 Chinese Firebellied newts and 2 African Dwarf frogs in a 29g paludarium. Then I had to move and just couldn't take them with so I gave them to a good home.

But, what exactly do you mean by "bioactive"? Because I think we may be trying to do the same thing (or something similar). My goal is to create, for all intents and purposes, a functioning ecosystem complete with renewable food source. Of course I will still have to supplement, but I think I can propagate slugs in the terrestrial half, and blackworms in the water. I will always have my compost worms as the main food source.

Now, I am by no means, an expert herpetologist or ecologist. Just a hobbyist. So, if you have any feedback I'm sure it couldn't hurt.
