So I am interning in Eastern Kentucky, right near the gorge, and I have been trying to find as many different species of salamanders that I can in my time here. I have found 10. Of the ones I have found, my favorites were the two Anides aneus I found over the previous weekend. These guys are easily my favorite salamander. I am a huge fan of moss and lichen so it is easy to see why these guys (on a simply cosmetic scale, they are way cooler with everything else they do) are my favorites.
This is what I have found so far.
Ambystoma maculatum
Plethodon richmondi
P. glutinosus
Eurycea cirrigera
Anides aneus
Desmognathus monticola
D. fuscus
Pseudotriton montanus diastictus
P. ruber ruber
Gyrinophilus porphyriticus Those greens were so cool. I sat there and just watched them for like 20 minutes. Everyone I went with was ready to go, and waiting on me. I guess they didn't see how neat they were.
