Photo: My Little Wooper

We found some large sponge in a pet shop the other day and decided to try it out as substrate. We covered half the tank to see if Wooper like it. We were thinking maybe he would enjoy substrate which is easy to grip because he's only got a bare bottom tank.

Anyway, safe to say, he doesn't like it. He's a completely different axolotl since we added it to the tank. Before he was very active and now he won't go near it and just sulks in the corner. It's looking likely that we'll be removing it lol.

I try to drop his worms all around the tank so he can hunt which keeps him busy. This is Wooper hunting on his new sponge. He literally stuck his head in every groove to try find his worms lol!

Yeah his face has grown recently. It seems to be getting wider lol. He's going to be too big for his bridge soon.

So cute! And I love the setup! :)

So close to the worm, yet so far away!

I sent one to you :D

We've finally made a mesh lid for Woopers tank. I've recently read a lot of threads on here about peoples axies jumping out of the tanks. My partner came across this mesh at a local hardware store, so Wooper is now safer. It's also better for balancing his fan on top. :D

We've hit a few problems with this hot weather. We've been struggling to keep his tank cool on a night, so we've introduced more wet towels. The other night it was so hot he only had a small window to look out of!

We've also been putting frozen bottles of water in the tank. Wooper sat there for about 30 mins just staring up like.. "What is that?!"

He's also started to get claws and because of the heat eats like a little piggy! All those yummy worms result in a very happy lotl. :D

I haven't posted in a while. Thought I'd share a picture of him from this morning.

Apparently this was the comfiest position in his tank this morning, he stayed there for quite a while.

How fun to see Wooper grow up! Thanks for the pics and updates, he is adorable :)
I just can't wait to get one :)

What a beauty. Would love to have one with freckles.

It's been a while since I posted about Wooper. He's got a more heavily marked freckly face now. He's recently had a few changes to his tank. I got him a new pot 3 days ago. Poor Wooper still hasn't figured out he can go inside the pot. He just walks around investigating it. Maybe one day he'll discover his new cave! :D

I love how he's getting frecklier and frecklier, and I can't believe how big he's grown! :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
