Please stop giving him such grief. No official in the UK would fine or arrest a 12 year old for catching a great crested newt and then letting it go immediately. He would only get into real trouble if he took one home. Young boys were not the primary target of this legislation...

I apologized for the way I reacted, said he was a good kid, and I said I hoped he would continue to pursue his passion. I didn't realize that qualified as giving him more grief.
