On Sunday, my female Spanish Ribbed Newt died from lesions around her mouth that wouldn't stop bleeding that started late Saturday late afternoon. She was fine in the morning, no lesions or bleeding. While she was sick, the male was on the turtle dock and stayed there until this morning, I wasn't too worried, because this was his behavior when he lost his previous companion 6 years ago from a Respiratory Infection. He became depressed, stayed above the water and didn't really eat. When I checked on him, he was thin, too thin (not like before), ribs were showing, his left hind foot was missing a toe and half of it was taken away from a lesion, he had a tiny lesion on his left side near his spine and on his under belly two lesions. '
Unfortunately, I have Reptile vets near me, but none know anything about Amphibians. So in desperation I called vets that do outside my area and they wouldn't help me at all unless I take him to them, they were 5 hours away in another state across the country. I spent $5 to text a Dr. from one of those sites and all she could do was give me advice to tell me this is what she thinks, but not help me any further, because she needed to see him, but help find a vet for me, but where she sent me to, I already checked. So back as square one. I went to the pet store I bought him at (that's how desperate I am) and showed him the picture and he said that it was a bacterial infection. I should place on a moist paper towel, put betadine and neosporin on the wounds, keep him out for an hour and them place him back in the quarantine water I have him in. I did that today and he perked up and actually ate some black worms. What worries me, is the bad foot I don't know if the damage is all the way down to the bone or is it just tendon, etc. With just recently losing the female, I can't lose our boy. Am I doing the right thing?
