What an ingenious idea! I bet it will be awesome once you finish it. Will you paint it?

I don't think I'll be able to paint it. The Krylon fusion paint everyone said was safe for aquariums eats it like the blood from the "Alien" franchise. I have seen other backgrounds made with cement/grout, so that is the route I will most likely take since I want a grey stone look anyway. I just need to do some more research on what type of cement to use and how long it will affect the water it'll be sitting in.

Made a few decorations with sculpey clay. Hopefully I can get a lot done on the castle over the next few days when I have the house to myself.

Love it! Fantastic work!
Any objections to doing the Hyrule castle down the road? Not a Zelda fan or anything.... :p

You know what if you had enough time I bet people would actually pay for these types of tanks, people pay for companies to aquascape tanks with plants and rocks and logs, why not 'retro-aquascaping'.

Maybe one day. Next on my agenda is a multi-level castle for my water dragon Mr. Wu ('cause all dragons need castles, right?) and an Invader Zim tank. I already had the gnomes made then I gave them all away to my co-workers. I made a Zim house for my bro years ago to hold the dvds I got him as a present and I've wanted one ofmy own ever since lol.

one day:

Put the first skim coat of cement on today. I think for the remaining coats I will switch to mortar. Hopefully I can get it nice and creamy so it'll spread like icing.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
