N, strauchii breeding

spots! aah, I in lurv :)
They are truly beautiful critters. How long are they now?

Spots, spots everywhere!!!! They are picky eaters. I have seen them spit out a frozen blood worm.

maybe they just need time to get used to them? My larvae sometimes act picky with new food, but then they catch on....

Wonderful creatures and congratulations! Raising from eggs is no easy task.

I've never been able to get the larvae I've raised to eat frozen bloodworms but looking back, I can't think of ever actually trying it.

The largest are (in my best attempt to measure) between 2.25 and 2.5 inches long. I have seen them jump out of the water. Many of them are hanging out in the plants near the surface. Needless to say, they now have a lid. :D

Thanks for all the nice comments. They do keep me busy every day.

They continue to grow. They pretty much look like the adults, but with gills. I have seen no sign of them losing their gills yet. They eat a lot and are fun to watch. I will get some updated pictures in the next day or so. :D

Photos....... :D

Argh, they are too beautiful...my eyes...
They look lovely :) I like them best when they still have the gills but the colors are fully defined. That larger individual in the first picture is going to haunt me in my dreams.
Well done!

wow. spectacular! I'm speechless :)

They are sooo cute!!! :D
What is their size atm and when do you anticipate them to morph?

Thanks for all the nice comments.

What is their size atm and when do you anticipate them to morph?

The largest of them are probably close to 3.5 inches. Honestly, I have no idea when they will morph. I thought it would have been before they reached the size the largest are now.

I have an area that they can climb out of the water, but am wondering if they would morph faster if I made more area available. I am going to try placing some of the largest of them in a 10 gal tank slanted with water in one end and plants and branches on the other to see if they take an interest in moving to land. Is it possible that they will keep their gills longer if most of their environment is water with only an island to climb out on? I will keep updating their progress.

some of them may be morphed already, and simply retain their gills for a while longer....

The spots are truly mesmerizing and they sure are getting big. Strauchii has always been the most beautiful newt to me. Glad to see more being CB in the US.

hmmm...do they snap up air at the surface? Some of my alpine morphs still have gills although they breathe at the surface now and even haul out on the island.

if you look at the species entry and scroll down toward the end there are photos of the development, including one by Jennewt (also her avatar) of an individual already morphed but with gills - that one looks just like yours :)

After revisiting the species information, as you suggested, I agree. I am sure most in the first tank have morphed. I am going to try a different set up for some of them this week and see if it makes any difference in them leaving the water. I have tried to keep the water temp cool, around 70F or so.

Well the question has been answered. They do just fine out of water. I moved several to a tank that was placed on a slant so they could climb out of the water. They spend most of their time out of the water despite having shriking gills. They are mini adults at this point!! :D I will attempt to get some out of water pictures the first of the week.

well yay! :)
Will you raise them terrestrially or continue to keep them aquatic?

For now I will keep most aquatic. We will see, I may decide to have some on land as well.

They are doing great and are ready for new homes. See for sale section for details. :D
