I was wondering if having nail polish on my nails would hurt my axies, as i hand feed them and had acrylic nails put on today, they use glue but this is covered by the nail polish, sorry if this seems a stupid question, but i don't want to hurt my axies!. Thankyou.

My nails are always painted and ive never had a problem hand feeding. Just make sure there are no little bits of polish that are chipping before you put your hands in the water. What i would consider with artificial nails is the length. Ive had my axie (bitzy) miss his food a few times and take my finger instead (he he he) so im careful not to have them too long any more as once my nail cut inside his mouth. He was very lucky and had no ill effects from it but its very easy for them to get an infection through a cut.

Agreed. I would add that your hands should be nowhere near the tank untill the polish is completely dry as well.

On the other side of the coin... fake nails are a known incubator for anything your hands come in contact with. I am not saying your hands are dirty of that you in any way have deficient hygiene. I am saying that studies have proven that the space under the fake nail is a breeding ground for anything that gets in there. That is the primary reason that fake nails are prohibited in all areas of the hospital where contact with a patient is likely and anywhere food is served and/or prepared. Just an opinion though.

Thank you

Hi! thankyou for your help, i appreciate all the advice. Regards Tara

Hi Tara if you are really concerned you could always get some untreated or unpowdered rubber gloves

would it be possible to use some very blunt tweezers :S so then you would'nt cut his mouth is is this not recommended, just a suggestion :S

gloves + blunt/wooden/bamboo tweasers/tongs are a good combination for feeding time if you are really worried about things like handlotion, nail polish, contaminations, etc. and both cost very little. Try it out.

Even if you get powdered gloves, you can rinse the outside of the gloves under the tap after you put them on to remove the powder.
