Yippee I'm a dad!!
This is my first year monitoring a site for Natterjack toads, and I must confess that I'm hooked!! My first string of spawn has hatched and there are another two strings to go in one of my pools.
Oh - and before any one asks yes I do have a licence for Natterjack toads and Great Crested Newts (UK requirement).

Fantastic, Dave! Natterjacks are a favourite species of mine. Do you have any photos? :)

No photos yet - but checking them again tonight so I might get some shots of the adults.

Nice, cant wait to see the pictures.

Are common toads straight forward to raise from tadpoles?

I attempted it last year, but none survived long after morphing.
I tried to raise them exactly the same as L. vulgaris morphs, with spread out bloodworms on a damp tissue in a plastic box with holes and soil on a slope/moisture gradient, which normally works.
Probably toads prefer drier environment when they morph.

How would you raise toadlets Dave?

Toadlets do indeed prefer drier conditions (generally) and they won't eat worms very easily at that size. It's fruitflies, pinhead crickets and springtails.

ok.

I thought about tropical woodlice too..

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
