Necturus maculosus Juveniles

I just wanted to show everyone some of my juvenile N.Maculosus. I know alot of people haven't ever seen larvae or juveniles. These guys are about 4-5 inches now but when I 1st got them they were 2-3 inches. They grow pretty swift and they have been eating blackworms, earthworms, and calf liver. Heres the evidence!

Nice pictures. What size tank are they housed in, and when do you expect you'll separate/move them to a larger tank?

I moved them into that tank just for the photos. They're actually living in a 20 gallon until they grow out of it. I also have 2 adult Necturus that I keep in a 55 gallon. N. Maculosus are very territorial even as juveniles. They bite and tail fan especially when they feel crowded. So I allways limit the individuals in my tanks. In the summer my basement temp only reaches 60 degrees. In the winter it gets a steady 40 degrees and I allways feed them 3-4 times a week. Rock piles with alot of plants do them alot of justice.

those are beautiful animals. are they wild caught or were you able to breed your adults?

Here's a picture of a nice individual that I saw at a nature center in Mansfield Ohio. There was a nice man there that showed me around the place. There was a large adult N. maculosus on display as well. They little guys with the running strips were awesome. I never seen them this small ever before. They were about 2 inches in length.

I found mine in a river a couple miles away from me. I don't think you'll find any in a pet shop maybe a laboratory supply. If you go that route you risk getting sick animals and such.

I thought it was illegal to possess any wild herps outside the months of April and November in Michigan. It was to my understanding that after the month of November you either had to eat, or release the any captives in possesion.

I called a conservation officer to ask some questions and things really backfired when I found that it is illegal to have the two tiger salamanders I caught from the wild many years ago. Today if I wanted a tiger I am aware of places to buy CB like this very website, but it was years ago when I was a kid. Today I can't release them because they are too well adopted to cage life and I worry about having them ( when I'm not supposed too ) most everyday.

If I'm wrong it would relieve a huge mental burden but I notice the location under your name and you say they were caught nearby. Do you have some kind of permit for them? If so where could I get one.

I've been keeping N. beyeri juveniles for a little over a month now, and I'm wondering whether I'm overfeeding one individual because it is much fatter (each is in its own small tank because they are part of a study, the water stays at 13 C). I feed them bloodworms (every other night or every 2 nights, depending) and occasionally will throw in a good number of mosquito larvae when I have the chance. A picture of the individual in question is attached (sorry for the quality). Thoughts? This is my first experience raising Necturus, I've had experience with both Eurycea and Ambystoma, the latter of which never seemed to stop eating.
