Hi I recently got an Axolotl about a week ago (we cycled the tank for about a month and tested to make sure it was fully cycled). I just wanted to show you guys a picture of him and make sure there’s nothing wrong with him because I’m very new at this. His tank is abour 66-67° and we feed him about 2 centimeters of earthworms a day.

He looks good to me. Good you cycled the tank and have him in some ultra fine sand. What kind of filter are you using? Could you post a photo of the whole tank set up. I wouldn't feed him every day, every other day, but how long is he? He might need it to grow into a big boy. Also, that temperature, axolotls like between 55 and 65 degrees, my girl's tank is at 62. If you could lower it a bit, you could BUT I wouldn't worry about it at all. Your little guy looks super cute and happy.

How old is he? Juveniles can be fed every day since they are growing and their digestion hasn’t slowed down yet.

The fish store we got him from didnt give us an age but he’s about 2 and a quarter inches

Oh he’s still little then. Daily feedings should be fine at that age.

@AnimeDan

Thank you for weighting in on the feeding.

@jake237

Yeah, your little guy is still very small. As long as you feed him appropriately and keep that tank nice and cycled, you'll have a happy axolotl.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
