Hi all,
I just got home from a week out of town and checked on my newts - I had a bad feeling that with the hot weather and my absence, one of them might have escaped or something else would be wrong. Well to my surprise, while thoroughly scanning the tank (because it really did seem like one was missing for about 15 min) a little baby N. crocatus popped out from under some bogwood. My animals are about 3 years old and I have never noticed breeding behaviors but clearly something went right in there.
I believe it's just the one - it's about 20-25 mm long, not sure when it might have hatched. My questions - should I separate the adults? Do I need to figure out live food? Is it going to be ok just keeping on like it has been for however long? Currently the adults are eating carnivore pellets, I usually have white worms but my culture crashed a few weeks ago, so now I'm anxious about supporting the little guys growth! It was definitely interested in the pellets but I don't know if that's sufficient. There is lots of elodea and snails in the tank, no daphnia or anything like that though. Part of me doesn't want to change anything if it's working, but I also don't know how many larvae we started with and if this is the lone survivor.
