Hi everyone, could someone help me out with CITES and applying ? My Neurergus kaiseri seem to be laying eggs all over the place. Many thanks Mark

N. kaiseri are in appendix 1 of CITES, meaning that trade across borders is difficult to get approval for. You can trade within the EU, but sending eggs abroad by post would be inadvisable due to customs restrictions and possible delays. If someone were to collect in person and use a ferry or the tunnel to get to the continent it may be possible.

But I'm sure there are plenty of UK based enthusiasts who would want some!

Are certificates still needed for sale and trade within the UK and European Union? I think they are, aren't they?

As I understand it, you can't transfer ownership of CITES 1 animals without a certificate. As this is unlikely to turn up while they're still eggs, you'd be better off raising them and selling juveniles.

The other Mark has sold loads of kaiseri with certificates. He posted some details on this thread:

For a definitive answer, I'd advise phoning DEFRA directly.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
