New axolotl owner

Hi, we have inherited a 4 year old axolotl which we think is male and which was very ill indeed when it came to us. It does seem to be improving and needs to be moved from the hospital style box to the (very expensive) tank - but the amount of information about the water required for axolotls is making me crazy - as is the whole filter issue. Has anyone found a quiet filter? The one supplied with the tank sounds like someone's hoovering in there.

if the filter is old check the spindle for wear, also a small amount of silicone grease (food grade) on the spindle and at the bottle of the impeller will help reduce noise.
